the Beginning Benchwork

FIRST LOOK

The layout as it was when we first saw it in late 2003

PERIPHERALS

Shown here are some of the pipes and an access door that will need to be made less conspicuous

THE BACK END

This photo shows the under the table entrance door to the crawlspace behind the layout

THE OTHER SIDE

Here is the same door, from inside the crawl space

THE CRAWL SPACE

Another view, this space will have various uses, including hiding and staging trains

BUILDINGS

Some of the buildings for what will be downtown St. Jacobs.

I like to get them to the half finished stage, and then push them around on the layout to check the fit and situation

MORE BUILDINGS

You can see my model of the Jon B. Martin Blacksmith shop, an important landmark

THE SNIDER FLOUR MILL

Again, it is half done. The interaction of this building with the river will have to be modelled correctly.

HARVEY WORKS ON THE LAYOUT

Harvey Snyder, a lifelong model railroader, is in charge of the layout being built. In the foreground is a diorama of Baden, Ontario, built by Greg Shinnie. It will be set in to our layout eventually...here it is just resting on top

HARVEY INSTALLS A BRIDGE

WORKING ON THE ENCLOSURE

Don, the carpenter, is getting close to finished on the enclosure for our railroad. He is also working on many display cabinets and cases for various other collections to be on view in the room

CREATIVE CLUTTER

THE RIVER

It is hard to believe that this section of bare plywood will one day be a miniature model of the Conestoga River in St Jacobs.

JUNE 15, 2004

Some cleanup has been done. You can see much of the enclosure, which is gradually nearing completion.

ANOTHER VIEW

SHOWCASES

Here, you can see custom built showcases that line the opposite wall. They will house a large collection of O scale rolling stock, locomotives and railroad collectibles.

MORE PHOTOS - taken January, 2005

Greg's  Baden Diorama  It is just sitting on the layout at this point...it needs to be blended in with the scenery. Lance's Frey's Garage Diorama also in position and needing to be blended in with scenery Harvey's Mennonite  Meeting House - a beautiful scratchbuilt model. The real thing is just outside St Jacobs, on the highway from Kitchener/Waterloo Farming Models to be placed on the layout. Lance scratchbuilt the typical Waterloo County Georgian style farmhouse, Harvey built the barn under construction based on the one on the farm where he grew up. We plan a barn-raising scene.
Another Overview.

The hills are getting basic contouring with paper mach. the open spaces are access hatches. Later, they will support some of our rural scenery.

Overview of the main Street of St Jacobs. So much detail to be added yet!
Still Another Overview

Note that we now have clouds painted on the backdrop.

Railroad Display

here is a shot of the showcases filled with railroad memorabilia  across the aisle from our railway

Another view inside the showcase, including a Lionel O scale CN switcher. More Artifacts Another  O scale engine in the showcase. Still another showcase view - all from the donated collection of Jan Gleysteen
